Antman: The Quantum Caveman

When Adam came out of the cave that dreadful night, he saw an amazing phenomenon, a deafening thunder rumbling on a nearby leafless tree, setting it ablaze. Very sight of reddish yellow flames was never seen before, though he has seen sun coming up with this same bright yellow shade everyday up his sky.

But this phenomenon, did something to him altogether. He had this recurring dream of a fellow human-like being controlling the yellow thing, which he did know, was also hot. He came about thinking that something is above his ability to understand. Some higher force above him, sending this yellow hot thing. Our Steve, still lives on, though he now knows how fire and thunder works. Oh did I start with Adam? Does it even matter? Can’t it be Lucy? Never mind!

I’m Antman

This is a superhero, whom no kids want autographs. But he is the one who gave Avengers a chance to End the Game on ruthless titan Thanos!

Hank Pym, Hope and their world is too formal; they are scientists with some boring language, making us think if we are in a DC universe. But there comes Scott Lang and his allies (especially Luis, Oh man!) like a proper Marvel comical setup.

Luis-who makes this movie Marvel-ous

I’m not going into the story of Antman or its sequel with wasp, but I’m looking at something that we have in similar with the whole Antman stuff and our cavepeople – what happens when you don’t have idea about something.

Quantum Realm

Conflict in the movie is a character trapped in ‘quantum realm’ and their family trying to get her back. A short intro to Quantum realm: it is where you are probably the smallest; observed physical laws don’t help us out; reality as we know gets blurred.

One thing scientists are sure of is a phenomenon called Quantum Entanglement, by which the Quantum trapped character communicates with Antman. But what is this entangling? This is a phenomena where 2 particles cannot be described independent of each other. Like if particle a and b are said to be entangled, when a spins up, b spins down to compensate. These two particles need not be physically linked in any way. Some entangling are so confusing to scientists that they are still trying to look out for answers.

Quantum entanglement has given some interesting leads in biology. Migration of various organisms from sea turtles to little birds, to the specific location every season is considered to be because of earth’s magnetic field. Scientists, both biologists and observational birders were searching for a possible compass that these organism contain to detect this magnetic field. This interaction that happens in a bird’s retina causing a change of particle position or spin, occurs with respect to earth’s magnetic field thus altering the vision of the bird.

A bird’s view, when it’s time to migrate!

Here we are seeing what is happening yet we are restricted to mere watchers of this event; we couldn’t participate or possibly alter any of these happenings. That’s were we need understanding! Like the cavepeople seeing the hot yellow thing is completely different from how we perceive light and heat; right now we are just cavepeople before the Quantum Realm…

The interesting part

What happens when we don’t fully know something, but still want to express its magnificence to others? We bluff; we add embellishments; we try to set it aside as either Godly/ghostly. While our cave-dudes made fire a God (fire’s sent from above and it all makes sense right? 😂), Marvel tries to see these Quantum junk as Ghosts causing disturbances in cell level for Ava (what?!), or Janet coming out of Quantum realm with “Quantum Healing Powers” representative of the ever existing optimistic view of any yet to be known topic.

Well, science is not I seek in Marvel movies, but this case is peculiar from any other Marvel stuff. Other Avengers defy the known physical laws like Iron man’s energy tech, unexisting Vibranium, etc etc..; but this one here dreads in an unknown space, on which a whole bunch of storyline is weaved.

Some 20 years down the lane, we would have decoded the Quantum Realm, and who knows, Antman might become absurd like any alien invasion sci-fi flicks. Only when science meets a strong underlying story it becomes a relatable piece of worm.

We are now the Quantum Cavepeople, not knowing it fully and adding our own versions of Gods and demons to it. It is the question of unknown and known that will drive science and humanity. Let me quote Neil deGrasse Tyson here:

If your understanding of god flows through places where science has yet to tread, because these are frontiers, before the Big Bang, etc.; if this is your concept of god, then the history of this exercise shows us that the God would then be in ever receding pocket of scientific ignorance.
