Where Periyar meets Buddha

It is always the burning desire and unquestioning allegiance towards a particular notion that creates a form of oppression.

Take an example of one who loves one’s caste and castemen; then one oppresses the castes below and never questions the castes above and even goes to the extent to protect their interests.

Take an example of one who loves one’s religion and never questions any of its eccentricities; then one tends to believe his religion is better than all the other in the world. The recent event of Kanda Sashti kavasam issue, ‘hurting’ the theists hearts is because of this unquestioning allegiance blocking a clear vision.

Take an example of one who loves one’s language and believes that it could be forced to make it the one language of a diverse country; then one never respects or acknowledges other languages of one’s own country, crushing the diversity.

Take an example of a man who says his creation is of strength and woman is frail and to be assigned only household chores; he never believes in equality of gender and imposes oppression on womankind.

Periyar transcends the borders of country, religion, caste, gender and language (this, for even the forward thinkers of tamil nadu, is often difficult to surpass). This is the place where I see the intersection of Buddha and Periyar. Two iconoclasts & social reformers who will be remembered till the end of world!
